Spring Sports Round Up

As the school year comes to an end, so does another season of sports. This spring season, Woodstock fielded competitive teams in every sport. This year, those teams were as follows: Boys and Girls Lacrosse, Softball, Baseball, Track and Field, and Boys and Girls Tennis.

Although all but Track and Field ended in a first round loss, every team had a competitive regular season and will be competitive again next year.

Starting off with Boys Lacrosse: after losing in the semifinals last year and losing lots of key players, it looked to be a tougher year for the Wasps. Dealing with injuries to key players all through the season, the Wasps battled to a 7-9 record and lost a close first round game to South Burlington 11-9. “One highlight this year was when we beat BFA 4-0”, said Oliver Szott. They look forward to next year, losing some more key players but looking forward to the challenge of rebuilding.

Next up is Track and Field. The boys track and field had a very successful season, winning their conference title and finishing second in states behind a record breaking high jump performance from Ezra Lockhart. Ben Johnson described the season as “ A strong season that I enjoyed a lot”. The girls also had a strong finish, finishing fourth in states.

Softball had their most successful season in awhile. After struggling the past two years, the team went 6-6 en route to the 11th seed, where they suffered a 13-1 loss to Otter Valley in the first round. “This is definitely one of Woodstock's most successful softball seasons. I can see a lot of improvement and growth in our player’s performance. Although we didn’t win all our games we played hard and stuck together throughout every game,” said junior captain River Miles.

Boys Tennis suffered a heartbreaker on the afternoon of Friday, June 3rd. After a stellar regular season they were forced with an unlucky draw, a match against 13th ranked CVU, whose seeding does not do them justice. CVU had one of the hardest schedules and is why they ranked so low. Woodstock battled hard but ended up losing 6-1, ending their season in a first round exit. Nixon Malik said, “Being co captains with Cooper was good because it helped us be responsible and guide the team to 9-2 and conference champs”.

Girls Tennis also had a hard fought season, finishing 8-5, good enough for the 4th seed in division 2. In what has seemingly become a theme this spring season, they suffered a 5-2 first round loss to the 5th seed Mt. Mansfield. They are graduating three seniors and hope to have another strong performance next season.

Woodstock Baseball had a strong start to the season, and behind star pitcher Jackson Martin and Co, the Wasps finished with a 6-10 record, good enough for 11th in Division three. They matched up with Montpelier in the first round, losing 6-1 in a hard fought battle.

Girls Lacrosse had one of the hardest schedules, losing only to one team that was not division one, number one ranked Hartford. They finished 7-5 5th in division two. They traveled up to Barre to play Spaulding, and lost an 8-7 heartbreaker to finish a very competitive season.

Congrats to all the spring sports teams on a strong season and looking forward to next fall!
