Girls Soccer Blasts Off to Exciting Start

The girls soccer team is rocketing off to an impressive start this year. They have won all three of their games handily, 5-0 against Otter Valley, 4-1 against rival Windsor, and 3-0 against Hartford. It seems like they are poised for success this season behind their coach Greg LaBella.

“He knows soccer well and how to teach us how to play well,” Junior River Miles states. Miles is a right midfielder this year and it is her first year on varsity. She talks about some specific challenges such as having to learn how to play smarter by not just kicking the ball and hoping it gets to the person you want it to get to.

The three wins aren’t too much of a surprise, though, as they had a rigorous summer schedule which included six scrimmages against opposing teams like Hanover and Green Mountain. They won all their scrimmages and it seems they carried that momentum right into the first few games of the season.

With the first games behind them, leadership has also been key to their success. Speaking of the captains, Miles stated, “The captains are very nice and give positive feedback to me.”

They had to do lots of fitness and running to prepare for the season during preseason, and it seems that intense work is paying off. Behind a powerful offense that has scored twelve goals in three games and a stout defense that has only allowed one goal so far, it looks like this team is going to be fun and exciting to watch and follow this soccer season. Their next game will be this coming Friday against Fair Haven.

It is the girls team's best start in years, and they look to make it past a first round exit in the finals last year and compete for a title, and if the beginning is any indicator, they may be a team to watch for as a contender. Stay tuned for more updates coming throughout the season.
