Bundle up with Books
This winter, many of us are inside with the negative temperatures and snowstorms outside, leaving us with not too much to do. Sure, we could simply browse social media or play video games, but that stuff gets boring after a while. Let’s turn to books! Here’s some great books to read while you’re trying to stay warm.
The first recommendation is a science fiction book called Divergent by Veronica Roth. It’s a fairly long book containing 487 pages .It’s set in a dystopian world with five different factions: Candor, Abnegation, Dauntless, Amity, and Erudite. Once a year, all of the 16 year olds have to choose which faction to go to after taking a test that tells them which ones they can select. This book tells the story of an Abnegation girl named Beatrice Prior. There are three books in the series called Divergent, Insurgent, and Allegiant.
Another good book to read is called Skyward by Brandon Sanderson. It also happens to be a science fiction novel. It’s a pretty long book, having 528 pages. This story follows a young girl named Spsena who is trying to attend flight school to learn to fly a fighter ship and fight against the aliens threatening her home. The flight school battles against Spensa about her attending flight school there, just because of something that happened with her father. Skyward is a trilogy at the moment, but Brandon Sanderson is still writing more.
A third great book is called Shadow and Bone by Leigh Bardugo. The book is a fantasy book about a girl named Alina Starkov. She’s a simple soldier, but then something changes. She has to cross the shadow fold, a tear in the world of complete darkness created by magic. Dangerous creatures lurk inside and each trip is a risk. She believes she has no magical powers, but that soon will change when she enters the fold. This book is a trilogy and is slightly shorter than the last, with 358 pages.
My last recommendation is a shorter book if you’re looking for a smaller read. Diverse Energies is a collection of short stories by many people; Paolo Bacigalupi, Ursula K. Le Guin, Malinda Lo, Tobias S. Buckell, Joe Monti, Cindy Pon, and Daniel H. This book is composed of eleven different short stories, telling the tales of teenagers all leading different, but tragic lives in dystopian worlds, fighting against their enemies as they search for answers.
Stay warm everyone, and good luck with the reading! You can find most of these books at local libraries or bookstores, or you can buy and read them online for anywhere from $8-15 each. These books are also fun to read with loved ones and or friends, so you could also give that a shot. Bundle up with your books during this freezing winter everyone!
