ALL AMERICAN Review
For many of us we have nothing to do over this extended stay-at-home vacation, well other than work, work and more work. But, our mental health is just as important and we need to all find time to do things other than work.
Based on a true story the Netflix series, All American follows the main character, Spencer James, as he transfers from a low quality school in South Crenshaw to Beverly Hills on a Football Opportunity.
Although, at first glance this show seems to just be a football drama, which it sort of is, the show has many more levels. It highlights: racism, violence, divorce, teen pregnancy, drug and alcohol abuse, as well as, what it’s like to lose a loved one and so much more.
The show is based on Spencer Paysinger’s life. Although, this is TV therefore, not every detail is the same; All American shows that life as we know it isn’t the same for everybody. We each have different opportunities. It demonstrates that the American Dream is possible with dedication and hard work. We all have hardships and things we have to deal with, which as a teenager I find really compelling.
In the first episode or two Spencer is approached by Coach Billy Baker from Beverly Hills and he asks him to play for him at Beverly High. Just in the first episode he is marked with the decision on whether to stay at Crenshaw and live with his mom and brother or to move to Beverly Hills and possibly make it big in Football.
All American definitely is not just a show that you sit down and “Netflix and Chill” about. I doubt someone could just watch the show without any emotion. It constantly has you at the edge of your seat wondering what will happen next. In Season 1 there is huge speculation that Coach Billy Baker may be Spencer’s father and throughout the season we are left wondering if he is or not.
Although, I like football and my favorite genre is drama, besides that I still give the show a rating of 4.7 Stars out of 5. The compelling themes and suspense is such a motivation to watch and keep watching. However, that is ultimately why I am not giving it 5 Stars, due to how intriguing it is, it’s a show you will watch and watch and watch. The show is also very intense with deep meanings, hence why you can’t just watch it without emotion.
