Coronavirus Care Package #3
Every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday the Buzz will be posting a Coronavirus Care Package. Our goal is to give you things to distract from the daily deluge of bad news and confusion. Think of these posts as a daily respite from COVID-19.
Fit-Nest (Physical Activity in Your Own Home)
Quarantine has screwed up a lot of our routines. We have had to readjust our sleep schedules, work schedules, socialization, and physical activity. For many, this sheltering in place has meant a cessation of what would be their typical exercises. Some usually get their steps playing sports and others prefer to work out at the gym, but our new reality does not really allow for either of those things to happen. So, with the help of a licensed personal trainer who I happen to live with (my mother), I am bringing you some simple exercises that you can do (with a killer playlist attached, link at the bottom!)
Start with a warm-up for 5 minutes.
To begin any workout, it’s important to, according to personal trainer Samantha Powers, “Move your body for five minutes.” You can do anything from dynamic stretching to running to dancing: “The point is to warm up your muscles to lessen the chance of injuring yourself.”
Basic Routine:
Push-ups (Samantha Powers suggests “as many as you can”)
20-30 Squats
20-30 Bicycles
(Repeat 2-3 Times)
10 Supermans (Holding for one second at the top))
10-20 Lunges (On each side)
20-30 Double Crunches
(Repeat 2-3 Times)
Stretch
As Samantha Powers puts it, “You’ve spent all this time contracting your muscles...you need to allow for elongation and stretching.” Here are some stretches you can do without any special equipment to help cool your body down from all that exercise:
Toe Touches
Child’s Pose
Tricep Stretches
One-Arm Cross
This routine is by no means set in stone. You should tailor it to your body and your fitness level. Samantha Powers says, “Everyone’s so different...Everyone can fine-tune things to meet their needs.” It is important, in this really weird time in our lives, that we take care of ourselves. We have to, through exercise or television or crafting, meet our needs, because there is no sign our situation will get better anytime soon. So, in the meantime, why not get ripped?
