WhatsApp Warriors

Is this generation of young warriors prepared to take on the chaos ahead? Maybe?

This generation, being fully equipped with technology that makes organizing astronomically easier, is able to more easily mobilize and join with like-minded activists compared to our protest progenitors. We have increased access to accurate information and are able to disseminate information in a fast and effective way. But, with the internet as a tool, social change becomes a sort of passive activism.

Social media is great at bombarding us with information; it is great at creating a community of like-minded people. But, my worry about social media is its ability to detach the user from real activism. I’m worried that people will “like” or “repost” instead of physically attending a protest, knocking on doors, or lobbying their representatives. I’m worried that our brand of activism will be less effective than generations past.

I hope my fears about Gen-Z activism are unfounded, because we have a lot of work to do and not much time to do it.
