Revised Study Halls for the New School Year

Study Halls have new flavors this year. The study hall everyone once knew and loved was renamed Academic Study and the other two are labeled ARC and Structured Study.

People already thought study halls were academic but now the school has added it to the name with a list of expectations to follow to make each student more productive. One of the expectations for the students is not using phones and having school work to work on always. The purpose of study halls was always to give each student the time to work on homework but now, they are pushing it more.

“If you have homework, don’t use your phone but if you don’t, then why not let people use their phones?” junior Hailey Berrio asks. “When I have nothing to do, all I can do is stare at the wall from not being able to use my phone.”

Another study hall in the school is the Academic Resource Center, better known as the ARC. The ARC is run by Mrs. Henderson and people normally use the ARC to get help with work and to be more productive.

“Mrs. Henderson guides people in doing their work with daily check ups with also checking the grades of each student to see what they need help with,” Junior Chloe Bergstorm explains, “Mrs. Henderson always helps when she can but if not, she sends an email to the teacher to get help for the student in need and she also stays in touch with the counselors as well.”

Chloe also explained that if you asked anyone that uses the ARC, they would say about the same thing. Mrs. Henderson tries to show that she cares and tries to make doing homework fun for people to make people feel more motivated to do their work.

Structured Study Halls are a lot like the ARC but are focused on just one subject like English. Structured study hall give more one-on-one time to ask questions from the teacher to stay on top of things in their class.

“Structured study hall helps with catching up and getting ahead in the class making us have no homework for the class which is nice.” Freshman Graham F. says. “We can’t use our phones but I don’t find that a big of a deal because we always have something to work on.”

Structured study halls also help students with summatives with letting them have a chance to rehand them in so the student can improve and get better in to see improvement in their grade with also having time to prepare for any upcoming ones. The study hall also helps students with getting personal help from the teacher of the subject so questions can be answered without having any confusion while doing the work.

Study halls may have some new flavors with expectations but not much has truly changed except with the phones. All the study halls still give time for students to get work done and administrators hope students use them wisely.
