Opinion: Solarium Fort Not Sexist
In today’s society, there are countless things to be scared of. Potential nuclear warfare, and the very state of our government. But still, there are people who will go around and find other issues to make prominent. A simple act, an admittedly childish act, of building a fort has recently come under scrutiny of being sexist. If you spend any time on the internet you've heard of feminists taking a minute action and blowing it up, making it seem like the very intention of the perpetrator was to belittle and slander an entire gender.
“I understand that there are genuinely people who think this is a problem, and there are people who are sexist, but when you see a sign in front of the solarium with a backwards L and a Z instead of an S you should know it's a joke,” says Yeabsira Miles, Woodstock High School senior and participant of the so called “sexist” fort. Surprisingly, in the well written article available on the Buzz, there is no picture of such a sign. There are no pictures of the signs that boast business hours, funny quotes from popular TV shows, and a fake menu that were on the window. All that is shown is a blockade with a sign that says “No Girls”.
“Even if it was a joke, we’re all seniors and I feel like we should be mature enough to look past it and not be offended,” says Gina Sorrentino, also a WUHS senior. While writing this article, I was approached by Sidney Pilot who states “If the girls had put up a sign that said no boys, it wouldn't have been viewed as sexist.”. I hate to think that we live in a world where that holds true.
