NHS Members Lend a Helping Hand for Woodstock Food Shelf

Recently, the WUHS National Honor Society (NHS) partnered with the Woodstock Food Shelf (WFS) in order to prepare meals for kids in need to take home on the weekends.

The Woodstock Food Shelf prepares simple meal packages containing items such as macaroni and cheese, applesauce, granola bars, soup, and cereal to be distributed to children who can’t rely on having meals on the weekends. The food shelf also provides kids with other daily essentials such as toothpaste.

In order to prepare the meals, the food shelf takes orders for multiple schools around the district including Prosper Valley, Barnard Elementary, Woodstock Elementary School, and Woodstock Union Middle and High School. After receiving the orders, the food is counted, sorted, and distributed by school.

That’s where NHS comes in. Once a month, NHS members have been volunteering during a free block to count and sort the food, making the laborious task much easier.

NHS member, Brook Heston, worked with WFS volunteer, Caroline Shephard in order to organize the volunteer work opportunity. So far, NHS members have volunteered monthly for four months and have packaged hundreds of meals for children in need.

“The work that we’re doing as NHS members for the food shelf is going really well. It’s beneficial for everyone, the people who work at Woodstock Food Shelf and the community members receiving the food,” says Heston. “The NHS members are putting their foot forward every month and it is really helping the community.”
