Dress Code Coming Back to WUHSMS?
Now that both the High school and the Middle school are under one principal, there is a new dress code that applies to students from grades 7-12.
The Code:
Woodstock Union High School and Middle School expectations for positive self-expression and appropriate dress at school are:
Clothing does not display offensive, violent or threatening messages and/or inappropriate language
Clothing does not endorse and/or advertise alcohol, drugs or tobacco
Clothing covers torso, buttocks and undergarments
Footwear must be worn at all times
A number of students feel the dress code is directed more towards females.
“I think the first half is fair. I think girls are gonna wear shorter things. Guys wouldn’t really think of wearing a crop top,” Freshman Kelly Gebhardt stated.
Sophomore Sami Yates agrees, saying that “100% of males don’t show their buttocks or torso, there should be a male dress code as well. It’s (The Dress Code) sexist, and it’s degrading to those who are confident in themselves and want to show off.”
“I don’t really like it because it’s more one sided towards girls. I don’t think that seems over the top. I’m just glad it’s not as chaotic as in 7th grade,” Freshman Hailey Berrio added.
Several students felt that they could make their own decisions regarding how to dress, “I think we dress great, I like my style,” Junior Micah Schlabach said.
In the past many students say that they were called out for violations of the dress code.
“I’ve definitely been dress coded a lot. And It sucked because then I had to wear something ugly,”Junior Chloe Noble said about having to get clothes from the nurse after receiving a violation.
Students seem to feel that the new dress code is an improvement. “I think this still allows you to express yourself in a way that’s safe for school. And it isn’t as strictly enforced,” Kelly added.
Middle School Teacher Mrs.Olson-Badeau also weighed in, “I never thought it (the way teens choose to dress) was distracting… But I do agree with the not having the drugs thing, unless it’s a sponsored event. Like a Long Trail event that students have a shirt from.”
Although students wouldn’t choose to have a dress code, this one appears to be one they can live with.
